Problem Statement¶
This analysis examines how configuration files are distributed and managed across various ecosystems. The primary finding is a shift from monolithic config files to a “layered configuration” model, where defaults are baked into the code, environment variables provide overrides, and local config files handle site-specific settings.
The analysis identifies three dominant patterns:
Centralized (single config file, typically YAML or JSON)
Decentralized (fragmented config files throughout the project tree)
Hybrid (centralized core with decentralized overrides)
The Hybrid pattern is the most resilient and is increasingly used in production-grade AI systems to manage complex hyperparameters and environment-specific secrets.
